The Upper Cliff Dwelling can be viewed but only with a Ranger guided tour. Making reservations to see the Upper Cliff Dwelling before your visit is highly recommended. The visitor’s center is where you will find the path to the Lower Cliff Dwelling. The trail to the Lower Cliff Dwelling is paved and has a few benches, but it’s quite steep. It is .5 miles, but can get your heart rate elevated. The Upper Cliff Dwelling is considered moderately strenuous.
Description: The Tonto National Monument is located in Roosevelt, Arizona. This is an unbelievable National Monument built by the Tonto Basin people more than 700 years ago. The monument has a Lower and Upper Cliff Dwelling sites to be viewed, visited and photographed. The dwellings give everyday people an insight and perspective into the life of the people of this village. This prehistoric site has fascinating architecture and gives tremendous significance to a land that was occupied by people we still know very little about. The Tonto Basin measures 300 square miles and supports a vast and diverse ecosystem.
**Guided tours are offered to the Upper Cliff Dwelling at 10:00 a.m., from November through the end of April.
**Early bird tours are offered each Saturday in October and May at 8:00 a.m. (to beat the heat). Reservations are required.
$3.00 per adult – Good for 7 days
16 years and under are free
(Lower and Upper Dwelling view & tours are no additional cost)
Junior Ranger Program
NO Camping (Camping is offered in many recreational spots surrounding the Monument)

Tidbit- Come early and maybe you can get the Lower Cliff Dwelling to yourself. By coming early you can view the Lower Cliff Dwelling with no rush and then be on time for your reserved 10am Upper Cliff Dwelling tour. Bring a backpack with water and a snack for the Upper Dwelling tour. It’s said to be a 3-4 hour tour.
