Granite Gear 36” Packable Wheeled Duffel – Product Spotlight
Granite Gear, a Minnesota based company, I have noticed used by many outdoor adventurers – I won’t name drop – and word of mouth is a good start, but I hadn’t used anything from Granite Gear for myself just yet. In preparation for the Hell Hike And Raft 2015 trip to Idaho I took in August ’15, I searched and found a forest full of travel bags and had a lot of time spent researching gear.
Many variations to the Idaho trip were altering my general protocol. I had to change, rethink, and adapt new gear to accommodate these variations. Out of that a slow, tedious and at times, an exhilarating task allowed me to connect with many great brands located right here in the United States. Granite Gear is one of them. Eventually, I had to pack my bags, all of them, including my Granite Gear Wheeled Duffel and catch my US Airways flight out of Phoenix, Arizona. Whether I was ready or not this was my Backpacking Gear List that stowed its way to Idaho in my Granite Gear Duffel.
The Granite Gear 36” Packable Wheeled Duffel
to me is the ultimate in lightweight and packs down into its own 8”x5”x17” pouch for long-term storage. Sold - to the no-nonsense, luggage-loving lady who tries to stay organized! Who doesn’t need an extra-large travel bag that folds-down to nothing larger than the size of a 12-pack of soda found in American grocery stores?
When I checked in for my flight with US Airways I only boarded with a small bag with my obvious at-hand travel necessities for under-the-seat safekeeping. Everything else was in that Granite Gear Duffel.
this duffel full and it weighed just under for the airline’s regulations. It had My Teton Sports Escape4300 backpack - filled for 3-days of backcountry backpacking, my trekking poles, my 2-man tent, my Oboz hiking boots, water shoes, and with all of that -- this bag surprised me by holding up to the task. US Airways was probably pretty kind to my luggage, but when I arrived to Idaho, we simply shoved it in to the vehicle any way it would fit with our entire team’s pile of gear.
and design to this duffel is simple and because I had many items with distinct structure of their own such as my backpack, tent and trekking poles, the bag stayed balanced, easy to roll, and any impact sustained didn’t shift my packed items. Do you have a destination backpacking-trip planned and need a bag to carry your gear? This is it.
However if you’re looking for a structured bag to keep things padded from impact, compartmentalized or guarded from wrinkles associated with travel-related disruption, this is not going to be the bag for you. You’re not going to find lined compartments or garment hangers nor any garment bags, but you will get a huge duffle that is easy to carry and holds all your backpacking gear for a destination adventure. And you can get it for a sweet deal of a dollar.
