Picketpost Mountain | Arizona Trail | Superior, Arizona | Mountain Matron

Tonto National Forest | Arizona Trail Passage 18 | Picketpost Mountain

This prominent peak just outside the Town of Superior is a rather short climb in theory, but can be a difficult climb in reality. This climb especially shouldn’t be done alone if you’ve never been to the summit. A 4mile roundtrip trail to the summit of Picketpost Mountain is intense and can be slightly misleading towards the top of the gully. For the first mile the trail is a simple walk, and well marked. Stay to the south of the mountain and take caution on the scramble up. Once to the summit you’ll find a stunning 360• view of Arizona’s mountainous terrain, the Town of Superior looking northeast, and on a clear day maintains as far as Tucson, to the South. A red mailbox and a steel bench await your arrival. Make sure to check the summit mailbox, sign the register, and take the same route down.

Directions to the Trailhead: Travel the U.S 60 east past Apache Junction and Florence Junction. ½ mile past Milemarker 221, you turn right at the “Arizona Trail” signs. Once you’re at the Y junction, turn left towards PicketPost Mountain and follow signs for the parking lot.
